Meet our team!
May is a Junior Microbiology and Pre-Med student. Her dream is to become a cardiovascular surgeon and contribute to developing new treatments for heart disease. Her time on campus is spent working as a Resident Assistant, tutoring in Calculus and Chemistry, and teaching GEMS 100. One of her biggest passions is traditional art.
Katerina is a Physiology and Neurobiology major with a minor in Greek Studies. She hopes to pursue a career in medicine in the future. She is currently a Community Assistant and participates in the Pre-Medical Society and the Greek Heritage Society on campus. In her free time, she enjoys playing soccer, running, and reading.
Yooni is a Neurology and Physiology major with a minor in Spanish. She is interested in working with blood and hopes to pursue a career in medicine in the future. She is currently a Resident Assistant on campus, participates in the America Reads Program, and is a Health Leads advocate at the Children's National Hospital in D.C. In her free time, she enjoys running, writing, playing the guitar, and maintaining the team's website.
Parinaz is studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland and is a part of FLEXUS, the women in engineering living and learning program. She has been involved in many programs that aim to increase youth interest in the STEM fields. Parinaz is also involved in the Academic Affairs Committee of the Gemstone Student Council as secretary.
Anjali is a General Biology major with a minor in Neuroscience. She hopes to pursue a career as a physician in the future. She participates in the Pre-Medical Society and the Primannum Honor Society on campus and volunteers for several other organizations off campus. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends, watching movies, reading, and traveling.
Jocelyn is a Cell Biology & Genetics and Theatre dual degree candidate. She hopes to attend medical school and become an OB/GYN, while somehow pursuing theatre at the same time. On campus, she works in the TDPS production office, is the Director of Development for The Weekday Players, and is the Treasurer of the Undergraduate Theatre Artists Society. She also enjoys singing, horseback riding, watching movies, and reading.
Kristen is a Biology major following a pre-med track. She's passionate about pursuing a medical career and hopes to become a gastroenterologist. She is currently serving as a Resident Assistant on campus and a Health Leads advocate for the National Children's Hospital in DC. In her spare time, she enjoys golfing, writing, watching documentaries, and camping.
Ben aspires to one day attend medical school and become a specialized physician that aligns with his passion of helping others. Currently on campus, he is a Community Assistant and am involved in RACA Counsel, in which Resident Assistants and Community Assistants are able to communicate with university staff and make improvements on campus. He is also a member of the fraternity Beta Theta Pi and am the active recruitment chair. In his free time he likes to spend time with his fraternity brothers
Michael is a junior bioengineering student focusing on medicine and biomedical research. He works as an undergraduate research assistant in the Functional Macromolecular Lab and volunteers weekly as an EMT at Branchville Volunteer Fire Company, a local fire station in College Park. He is a Class of 2015 Representative to the Gemstone Student Council and is a co-chair for the Public Relations committee. Hemi is majoring in Neurobiology/Physiology with a minor in Spanish. After graduating from UMD she would like to attend medical school. Outside of Gemstone, she is a TA for UNIV100 and is a Peer Mentor. She is also a volunteer EMT at the Branchville Volunteer Fire Company, a volunteer at the Children’s Developmental Clinic on campus, and a TerpCorps Coordinator. Mike is a Cell Biology and Genetics major. He is interested in pursuing a medical career. He is very involved with the Gemstone Program, acting as a section leader for several classes, a mentor for the Gemstone CONNECT program, and as a member of the steering committee for redesigning the initial class of the program. Some interests include playing guitar, hiking, biking, and reading outdoors.
Oma is a current junior at UMD College Park majoring in Neurobiology and Physiology, with the hopes of going to med school to become a pediatrician. She is a member of the UMD Womens' Rugby team and also is a member of the Maryland chapter of Delta Epsilon Mu fraternity, as well as other clubs on campus. She loves hanging with her friends, going to concerts, and other fun activities in her spare time and is a proud member of Team CLOT!.
Mentors
Adam is a Ph.D. candidate in Bioengineering and has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, University of Maryland '10. His research is focused on material and device development for biomedical applications including hemostatic materials, coagulopathy diagnostics, hemofiltration, and early stage disease detection. Global interests include translational academic research and early stage R&D.
Peter is the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Graduate Programs at the A. James Clark School of Engineering and is also a professor for the Fischell Department of Engineering. The main thrust of Professor Kofinas’ research program aims in the synthesis characterization and processing of novel polymer based nanostructured systems used in a variety of technological fields ranging from medicine and pharmaceutics to energy storage and microelectronics.
